I was born Ann Starner, the ninth of ten children. I grew up on a dairy farm in Holmes County, Ohio, under the strong influence of both German and Swiss heritage. I spent many happy days by my mother's side in the kitchen. I still use and cherish many of her recipes today.
The love of cooking has been passed down through my family from my great-great-Grandmother Rosie. At the age of 30, Rosie took her 10 year old daughter, her love of cooking, and a promise of a job with her when she left her home in the Thun area of Switzerland and relocated to Greer, Ohio. Her passion for cooking was passed to her granddaughter, Esther, (my mother), who was quick to finish her chores so she could make the 2-1/2 mile hike to Grandma Rosie's house to learn how to cook.
My first culinary endeavor was a retail and wholesale bakery shop, in Millersburg, Ohio, where I would begin my mornings at 4:00 am making 700 - 800 dozen doughnuts. Upon moving to Lynchburg, Virginia, I opened DeHass Cheese Chalet.
Our family moved back to Ohio and in 1987, I purchased Grandma's Homestead Restaurant in the tiny little village of Charm, Ohio. My goal was to serve delicious, home-cooked meals and wonderful desserts at a reasonable price -- an offering that appealed to both locals and tourists. A premise we still operate under today.
I am the proud mother of five grown children; Ted, Dan, Lee Ann, Suni, (pronounced "Sunny"), and John, as well as 10 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchild. All of my children spent many hours of their childhood with me in the kitchen at our home or at the restaurant. Suni, LeAnn and my sons have their own successful business careers.
